WEBSITE AND BLOG MENUS – TOP OF PAGE As I was walking this morning I started thinking about all the jobs that I have worked at throughout my lifetime.
Now that I’m retired I can waste my time thinking of such matters it seems.
I’m not talking about the chores I did around the house as a child growing up.
I mean the real jobs.
The kind you got hired for and they actually give you a paycheck at the end of the week.

Is that a list or is that a list?
No wonder I’m tired all the time.
No one will ever be able to accuse me of being lazy.
The last job I mentioned, Entertaining, I still do to this day and I’m loving it.
Finally I’m able to do something that I truly enjoy and I do it because…
“I WANT TO”
I plan on performing until no one wants to hear me anymore.
So…you might be wondering…
“How did you remember all of those jobs?”
Years ago while applying for a job on a Military Air Force Base.
I was informed that I had to fill out an application for a “SECRET CLEARANCE”.
Was my first thought.
My next thought was one of panic.
“I will never pass a Secret Clearance check…I just know I won’t.”
On the application I had to list everything I had ever done throughout my entire life.
Every Group, every Organization, every Club I’ve ever joined or have been associated with.
My personal thoughts and opinions on many issues.
I had to list every place I ever worked.
Everywhere I lived.
All this information must include ‘Starting’ dates and ‘Ending’ dates.
Why I left a job or moved to a new place.
Associates, Marriages, Girlfriends.
No gaps in time or reasons.
Your whole life has to be accounted for.
Every day, every week, every month of every year.
This is all done to see if I could be “COMPROMISED” in any way.
And it all better make sense.
If it doesn’t?
I’ll be talking with a CIA agent explaining to them why there is a discrepancy.
I can also tell you that they do ‘Visit’ every School, every Residency and Every Job you listed on your application.
They visit your current neighbors…and past if need to.
Yes it’s true.
Three of my neighbors at the time of my filing of the application told me an Agent visited them.
Years later out of curiosity I requested a Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) on myself.
I wanted to see just what the Government found out and now knew about me.
It took almost three months to receive the report.
When I received it and read the thick contents, almost an inch thick, I was in total shock.
Every person they spoke with, every job, every school, everything was there.
The questions they, the CIA agents asked…and the answers that were given.
A sixth grade teacher stated…
“I thought he would turn out to be anti-social.”
Another comment…
” He exhibited tendencies of future addictive habits due his lack of self discipline.”
My feelings were hurt quite a bit throughout this report.
In Life every moment of contact with another human being is remembered by you both.
And that both of you formulate an opinion about each other.
Even years and years later those encounters can be recalled.
If they were bad or good… they are what they are.
I never imagined that people of authority over me throughout the years thought so negatively about me.
Some of their statements could have be taken in a negative way towards me.
I was mad at times.
I even cried a few times just from the memory of seeing a persons name or a familiar place mentioned.
Recalling moments that were shared or of belonging.
If you’ve never applied for a Secret Clearance before, let me tell you it’s not a pleasant experience.
It actually took me 5 nights at home to fill out the twenty three page application.
Then it took two more days just to proof read the answers I had given.
I was given seven days to do it or my offer of employment would be terminated.
It took three weeks after turning my application in before I got the call to come in for a final interview.
The job wasn’t mine…YET.
I had to come in and speak with Human Resources.
I was sweating while I sat in the waiting room thinking about all my answers that I wrote on my application.
Hoping everything checked out okay.
There was an armed uniformed guard posted by the door leading into the room I was waiting to go into.
Nothing too intimidating about that.
So there I sat waiting for either my confirmation of employment or hearing the usual…
“Sorry but…”
I was finally called into the office.
Three Uniformed officers were waiting to great me.
After an hour of discussion and questioning…the interview was over.
I would be notified of their decision.
I was informed that I was…
“HIRED”
I was to come in the next day to finalize the paperwork and to be…
“Sworn In”
The next day I found myself raising my right hand…
…to swear…
MY LOYALTY AND
MY ELEGANCE
TO MY COUNTRY.
It was quite the moment and I will remember it always.
The pride that I felt that day.
But…what I had to go through and what I felt before my conformation will also never be forgotten.
All the things I had to remember.
The wheels were a-turning for sure.
So once again you might be asking?
“How did you remember all those jobs?”
Well…I was able to recall all this information because of two reasons.
– 1 –
Out of habit I still kept a list of any job I worked and every place I lived after the Clearance job.
You can never tell when the Government might knock on your door asking for your assistance to save the world.
Right?
– 2 –
My last Social Security statement.
It listed ‘almost’ all of the other jobs I’ve worked that Social Security money was taken out of after my Clearance job.
The other jobs were either paid for in cash, under the table or through other means.
Of course these were not on the Social Security list.
Due to my ‘Force of Habit’ I kept track of all of them.
…I have to say that It’s been one heck of a ride.
The jobs I’ve had were all amazing in their own ways.
And the people I’ve met.
We shared a part of life together as we traveled along side by side through those brief moments.
I will never forget any of them.
I’m sure that every one of you are scratching your heads and wondering…
“Why so many jobs?”
“Did you have trouble holding down a job?”
“Is it true what your sixth grade teacher said…’You are anti-social’.”
“Tell us what were the reasons?”
The “reasons” that I had so many jobs is even more interesting than how many that I had.
